Home : No Latex : NoLatex Information
Because bandages with latex tend to cause irritation, particularly to those who have an allergy to latex, many hospitals are engaging in a movement to eliminate latex products all together. Andover has committed itself to meet the demands of its consumers, and this new “patented technology” reinforces that the company is an outside-inside company that focuses on fulfilling the needs in the market.
Severe anaphylactic reactions and even deaths have occurred because of latex allergies. For the undiagnosed person, latex anaphylaxis has created a new medical emergency in the health care environment. Latex sensitivity is estimated to affect 8-12% of health care workers.
Between 1988 and 1992, the US Food and Drug Administration received 1,118 reports of systematic reactions related to latex. Fifteen of these reports were of death. In early 1996 the statistics grew to 1,600 reports of reactions to latex and 23 deaths. Andover Coated Products’ release of its patented latex-free bandage, CoFlex NL, was well-timed. Starting September 30, 1998 the FDA placed the following rules into effect.
The FDA has issued a final rule requiring labeling statements on medical devices containing natural rubber latex that contacts humans to state:
